英語の諺を覚えておくと便利です。日本語と同じような意味のものもあり日本語英語両方で覚えておくと何かの会話の時に使えて話題になるでしょう。

英語の諺で有名なモノをいくつか確認しておきましょう。

1.  A picture is worth a thousand words.  百聞は一見に如かず
2.  All good things must come to an end. どんな良い事にも終わりがある
3.  Actions speak louder than words. 行動は言葉より雄弁　　不言実行
4.  Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  蓼食う虫も好き好き
5.  Better late than never. 遅くともしないよりはまし

会話の中で賢く英語の諺を出してみましょう。

         

英語の上達への近道のひとつは、決まりきった表現をそのまま活用することです。自分で独自の質問を考えるのも良いですが、余計な作業になるだけ。既に決まり切った表現や言い方があるのであればその表現や言い方をそのまま覚えてしまいましょう。沢山の決まりきったフレーズをそのまま覚えてしまえば応用範囲も広がってきます。自分で考えないで既にあるものはそのまま活用する。これが英語上達への近道のひとつになります。

今回は、英語で道を尋ねる時の質問の仕方、既にある決まりきったフレーズを覚えましょう。

１．Could you tell me how to get to the station?  駅まで道教えてください。

２．Pardon me, I’m lost, how do I get to the station? すいません、迷ってしまって、駅まではどうやって行きますか？

３．What’s the best way to the station? 駅まではどの道が一番良いですか？

４．Excuse me, are you from around here? すいません、ご近所の方？

５．Excuse me, I’m looking for this address. すいません、この住所探しているのですが？

６．Can you tell me the way to the station?駅までの道教えてくれますか？

７．Is it far from here? ここｋら大分ありますか？

８．Is it a long way?  遠いですか？

９．It’s just around the corner.   すぐ近くです。

10．It’s a long way on foot.  徒歩だと遠いです。

11．It’s about a 5 minutes walk.  徒歩で5分位です。

12．It takes a while.   しばらく時間かかります。

逆に道を教える表現はどうでしょうか？これもパターンを覚えましょう.

１．The easiest way is to go straight.  簡単なのは真っ直ぐです。

２．The quickest way is to take the right road. 早いのは道の道。

３．Turn left/right at the end of this road. この道の端で左/右へ曲がって。

４．Take the first road on the left/right.  最初の道を左/右へ。

５．It’s about 100 meters from here. ここから100m位です。

６．It’s on your left/right.  左手/右手にあります。

７．You’re going the wrong direction. 方向が間違っています。

道を聞かれて知らなかったら？

１．I’m sorry, I don’t know.  ごめんなさい、分かりません。

２．Sorry, I’m not from around here.　すいません、この辺は不案内で。

３．I’m afraid I can’t help you.  お役に立てなくて。

４．Ask the policeman at the police box.  あの交番のお巡りさんに聞いて。

道を知っていたら？

１．Follow me.  I’ll show you the way.  付いて来て、そこまで行きます。

２．Do you want me to draw you a map?  地図を描いてあげましょうか？

 

日常会話で良く使われる表現には、パターンがあります。言いたいことを自分で考えるよりは、決まりきった表現や言い方が既にあるのであればそれらをそのまま覚えて使えば効率的に会話力を上達させることができます。

言いたいことが言えないと悩むよりは、バカのひとつ覚えで良いのでパターン表現を沢山覚えてそれを実践してみましょう。

パターン表現のいくつかを見ていきましょう。

1. お願いパターン

　　  Could you do me a favor?      お願いがあるのですが。

　　 Would you help me?    助けてくれる？

　　  Can you do something for me?  ちょっと良いですか？

          Will you help me with this problem?　この件で助けてくれる？

　　  I need your help with this matter.  助けて欲しいのだけど。

　　2.  聞き返すパターン

　　 Say it once more please.   もう一度言ってください。

　　 Repeat it once more please.

         Please repeat what you said.

          Could you please say it once again?

         3.   ゆっくりお願いパターン

　　  Please speak slower.   ちょっとゆっくり話してくれる？

　　  Slow down, please.

          Could you not speak so fast?   そんなに早く喋らないでください。

　　  4.    ちょっと書いてパターン

　　  Please write it down for me.   ちょっと書いてください。

　　  Write it down here, please.

           5.  トイレどこパターン

          Is there a bathroom here?

          Where is the toilet?

          Where is the restroom?

          Is there a public restroom here I can use?

          Is there a men’s room nearby?

          How can I find a toilet?

          How can I find a WC?

          6.   挨拶パターン

　　　I’m glad to see you again.  またお会いできてうれしい。

　　　I’m happy to see you again.

            It’s great to see you again.

            I’m happy we could meet again.

            Nice to see you again.

            I’m so glad we ran into each other.

          7.  久し振りパターン

　　　 Long time no see.   久し振りですね。

　　　 It’s been ages.

             It’s been a while.

             It’s been such a long time.

          8.  じゃあねえパターン

　　　 Have a good time!   じゃあねえ！

　　　 Good luck.

            I wish you well.

            I wish you luck.

            I wish you all the best.

          9.  お大事にパターン

　　　I hope you get better soon.   すぐ良くなると良いね。

　　　I hope you’ll get better soon.

            I wish you a quick recovery.

            Hope you feel better.

            Get well soon.

英会話上達は、まず決まりきった表現をそのまま使うことからです。

           

 

英語を喋る時にちょっと英語らしく喋るにはコツがあります。英語の発音でリエゾンと言って英単語の最後の音と次の英単語の頭の音が連続して繋がった形で発音されることがあります。このリエゾンのパターンを覚えて喋ることも英語らしく喋るコツです。その他に抑揚やイントネーション、強弱のリズムも考えて喋ってみると英語らしい話し方になると思います。

その他にスピーチ等の正式な話し方の場合にはお薦めできませんが、日常会話では、短縮形と言う英語らしい発音の話し方があります。これもパターンを覚えておくと活用できるでしょう。このようなパターンを覚えておくと聴き取りの場合でも何を言っているのか直ぐ理解することができます。短縮形をちょっと整理してみましょう。

1.  I have got to go.   ➡　I’ve goota go.
2. I have got a book. ➡　I’ve gotta book.
3. Do you want to dance?  ➡　Wanna dance?
4. Do you want a banana?  ➡　Wanna banaba?
5. Let me in.   ➡　　Lemme in.
6. Let me go.  ➡　　Lemme go.
7. I’ll let you know.  ➡　I’ll letcha know.
8. Did you do it?  ➡　Dija do it?
9. Not yet.  ➡　Na chet.
10. I’ll meet you later.  ➡　I’ll meechu layder.
11. What do you think? ➡　Whaddyu think?
12. What did you do with it?  ➡　Whajoo do with it?
13. How did you like it?  ➡　Howja like it?

リエゾンをうまく取り入れて発音してみると英語らしい会話ができるかも知れません。あくまでもインフォーマルな会話で使う話し方ですからスピーチの中ではあまり使わない方が良いと思います。代表的な短縮形の発音を覚えるようにしてみましょう。

1.  gonna = going to      I’m gonna buy it.
2.  wanna = want to      I wanna drink a beer.
3.  gotta = ‘ve got to       You’ve gotta leave now.
4.  gimme = give me     Gimme that book, please.
5.  lemme = let me         Lemme speak a bit.
6.  I’ma  = I’m going to      I’ma finish it soon.
7.  outta = out of                 She run outta her house.
8.  kinda = kind of              This is kinda my taste.
9.  dunno = don’t know       I dunno how to say.
10.  shoulda = should have     I shoulda told you.

インフォーマルな日常会話でこのようなこなれた発音をすると多少は英語らしい会話になると思います。パターンさえ覚えておけばリスニングの時にも迷うことがないでしょう。
