前置詞

英単語の総数は膨大なものです。ネイティブでも全部は記憶不可能でしょう。

英単語で大事なモノは、やはり動詞、副詞、形容詞等でしょうが、

シンプルな前置詞を忘れないことも重要です。

動詞や副詞、形容詞、名詞等々の英単語は、数が多く

記憶したり慣れたりするにも長い時間が必要でしょう。

しかし、前置詞の数は数十個と限られています。

良く使われる重要な前置詞は20個程度のモノでしょう。

そのように前置詞はシンプルな英単語ですが、

意味や使い方はとても幅広く多様な用途で使われます。

数も限られているのでこのシンプルな前置詞の使い方を

しっかりと押さえることで簡潔な会話が可能になるのです。

数が限られている前置詞は、時代が変わっても

新しい前置詞が出現するようなこともないでしょう。

20個あるいは30個程度の前置詞の用法をしっかり理解すると

簡潔な英文で会話ができるようになります。

 

場所の前置詞の用法をしっかりと理解しましょう。

１．at      ある一地点に　　　There is a dog at the entrance.

２．above   離れて上に　        The bird is flying above the house.

３．below 　下の方に　　　He jumped in and swam below the water.

４．on    接触して上に　　　The picture is on the wall.

５．under  下に　　　　　　They slept under the open sky.

６．on top of   上に　　　　  The cat is on top of the roof.

７.  in front of   ～の前に　　We are waiting in front of the building.

８．between   ～の間に　　　My house is between big trees.

９．in    中に　　　　　　　　She is waiting in the house.

10．next to   ～の次に　　　　I want to sit next to her.

11．behind  ～の後ろに　　　He was sitting behind Mary.

 

前置詞はどれもシンプルで誰でも知っている英単語でしょう。

聞いてみれば知っているので「何だそんなのもう知ってるよ」と

言うかも知れませんが、聞いて読んで分かるというのはまだ不十分です。

知っているからすぐ使えるかと言うと別問題で簡単には口で言えません。

テストの点数は良いけれど英語が喋れないと言う人が多いのはこのためです。

知っているのと実際口からスンナリ出てくる、使えると言うのは別なのです。

簡単だから、知っているからとぞんざいにせず、

会話で動詞はとても大事で話の意味を左右するモノです。

動詞を覚える時には終になって使われる前置詞も一緒にして

１．動詞＋toの組み合わせ

• talk to                 I am talking to you.
• listen to              Listen to his speech carefully.
• speak to              You should speak to him first.
• belong to            This car belongs to my father.
• happen to           What happened to you?
• used to                 He used to go to the store there.

 

２．動詞＋forの組み合わせ

• wait for                 We waited for her for a long time.
• look for                  I am looking for a new instructor.
• ask for                    If you want to get it, ask for it.
• apply for                He decided to apply for a new position.
• care for                   She is caring for her baby.
• long for                   He longs for her return.
• head for                   I am heading for the station.

 

３．動詞＋atの組み合わせ

• smile at                     She is smiling at me.
• stare at                      The man was staring at him.
• aim at                         He aims at the target to shoot.
• look at                         Look at that car.
• point at                       Don’t point at a person.

 

４．動詞＋fromの組み合わせ

• recover from               He finally recovered from the injury.
• borrow from                I borrowed money from him.
• escape from                 He escaped from a prison.
• graduate from             She graduated from university this year.

 

英単語を覚える時にも決まった組み合わせのフレーズ等のかたまりに

気をつけて覚えるようにすると効率的で忘れ難くなります。

動詞と前置詞の組み合わせも対にして覚えると忘れることもないでしょう。

英会話の上達には前置詞をマスターすると効率的です。

前置詞はシンプルですが、必ず会話に出てきます。

in spite ofとかdespiteと言うモノがあります。

１．although      ～だけれども

　　基本パターン➡ Although　 ＋　主語　＋　動詞

　　Although we were all tired, we tried to finish the work.

       Although she is poor, she is supporting children the community.

       Although he is very young, he is running his own business.

       Although he has an old car, he bought a new car last month.

      Although she is ill, she went to the office to have a meeting.

 

2.  in spite of     ～だけれども

　　基本パターン➡　in spite of ＋　名詞/代名詞

　　　　　　　　　　in spite of ＋　動詞ing

        She is always smiling in spite of her illness.

        In spite of his efforts, he failed to execute the contract.

        In spite of her age, she is leading a group of senior staff.

        In spite of the communication barrier, they fell in love at first sight.

        In spite of rain, they went out for cycling.

 

３．despite    ～だけれども

　　基本パターン➡　despite ＋　名詞/代名詞

　　　　　　　　　　despite ＋　動詞ing

        Despite the bad weather, they went to the sea-side resort.

        Despite the disagreement, they decided to start the business.

         Despite being a rich man, he is always supporting the poor.

          She looked lovely, despite her eccentric costume.

          He remained calm despite the criticism by the employees.

 

何だか英文法の授業で聞いたような話ですが、

シンプルな構文なので使い方を覚えて活用してみましょう。

英語の上達には簡単な事をコツコツ繰り返すことが大事です。

地道な練習もしないで試合でいきなりヒットを打つことはできません。
