英文法

英語の前置詞は英会話でとても大事です。

前置詞はシンプルですが、とても沢山の意味があり奥深いもの。

シンプルでも簡潔に自分の言いたいことを表現できます。

シンプルなだけに前置詞をつい間違って使うことがあります。

前置詞の使い方について、間違い探しをしてみましょう。

 

以下のセンテンスの間違いを見つけてください。

正解は一番最後にあります。

 

1. He invested his money on the stock market.
2. Her birthday is on January.
3. She is married with a teacher.
4. It has been snowing from Monday.
5. I am afraid from dogs.
6. His computer is superior than mine.
7. She failed from mathematics this week.
8. You can insure for theft.
9. They went in a trip last month.

日本人は英会話と言うと英文法を意識しがちです。

英文法は、受験勉強で散々苦労したものです。

英文法は、私達にとってほとんど試験対策のための勉強でした。

だから英文法を完全に勉強しないと英会話もできないと思いがちです。

英会話の上達に確かに英文法は必要ですが、

最小限にして上達することも可能です。基本文法だけでOKでしょう。

例えば基本構文だけをしっかり確認しておくだけでも十分です。

あまり英文法に神経質になることもありませんが

ここでは英文法に出てくる節と句の違いについて確認しておきましょう。

 

１．節CLAUSEとは何か？

　　節、英語のCLAUSEは、文章の一部で基本的な単位として

　　主語＋述語からなっています。基本的な文章と言えるでしょう。

　　（例）

• He must wash his hand.
• She finished her job.
• I like baseball.

         従属節と言うのは、文章の中で追加の情報を提供するような節で

　　それ自体では意味をなさないようなものです。

        従属節は、良くalthough, since, if, when, because等で文章の

　　頭に来ることが多いです。

　　（例）

• Although I am busy,  ……..
• Since the street is crowded, ……..
• If you are free,……..

 

２．句PHRASEとは何か？

　　句、英語のPHRASEは、文章の中で意味を追加する句です。

　　句自体は、文章ではありません。いくつかの単語のつながりです。

　　従って、句には、主語、述語と言う関係性は出てきません。

　　（例）

　　名詞句の例としては、

• two little children
• the active senior members
• hard working bank clerk

 　　動詞句の例としては、

• I saw a postman in front of my house.
• He gave her a gift.

          副詞句の例としては、

• especially difficult
• all the way（はるばる）

　　　前置詞句の例としては、

• after a long vacation
• in front of the new office

 

今更当たり前のようですが、節と句をしっかり再確認しましょう。

節は、動詞＋述語を含むセンテンスで文章の中で大きな働きをします。

句は、いくつかの単語の組合せのかたまりで動詞＋述語はありません。

それぞれが文章の意味を補完する働きをするもので

名詞句、副詞句、形容詞句、前置詞句等がありあｍす。

あまり神経質になることもありませんが

節と句の基本的働きについて再確認です。

 

 

どの言語でも同音異議語は出てきますが、

英語でも同音異義語が沢山あり、やっかいです。

しかし韓国語のような表音文字を使う言語程ではないかも知れません。

韓国語は良く知りませんが、兎に角同じ発音の単語が多いようです。

ドイツ語やスペイン語ではあまり聞いたことがありません。

インドネシア語でも同音異義語らしいものは少ないですね。

文字で書いてある場合には区別ができますが、

耳で聞く限りでは同音異義語は理解に迷うものです。

英語の同音異義語は想像するよりも数が多いのですが、

いくつか英語の同音異義語をチェックしてみましょう。

英語の同音異義語は会話の中でも良く出てきます。

耳で聞いていると咄嗟にどの意味か迷うこともあります。

似たような発音の英単語は日頃から注意するようにしておきましょう。

英会話で喋る場合は余り関係ありませんが、

英文を書く時にコンマを使います。

そのコンマの使い方を正しく理解することも大事です。

何となくコンマを使っていないでしょうか？

間違って使うことはないかも知れませんが、

何となく使っているコンマの使い方を

整理して再確認しておきましょう。

 

コンマの使い方を整理すると次のような分類ができます。

１．英単語を並列する時

I’ve been to New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Do you want to have a cup of coffee, tea or any soft drink?

We met Mary, Jessica, Cathy and Julia yesterday.

 

２．いくつかのフレーズを並列する時

She likes playing tennis, studying English and listening to music.

 

３．ふたつの文章をつなげる役割

I have a bicycle, but it’s too old.

She has been very busy, therefore she couldn’t have a vacation.

 

４．文章の導入部の働きをする時

Regarding the next plan, we need to discuss more in detail.

Having finally arrived in town, we could have something to eat.

 

５．注意をひく単語の区切りとして

Hey, don’t tell me a lie.

Yes, I can do that work by tomorrow.

Well, that will be fine for me.

 

６．括弧の代わりに説明文を追加する役割として

My car, which I bought last year, have some mechanical problem

We visited Orland, Florida, two year ago.

Her father, old and sick, is still staying in the hospital.

 

７．複数の形容詞を使う時に

She is a beautiful, elegant and smart woman.

He felt very confident, powerful and ambitious.

 

８．引用文を持って来る時に

She asked me, “Do you want to talk with me?”

 

９．対比するための文章を繋げる時

He is a hard worker, but a bad singer.

You have a bright future before you, not behind you.

 

10．文章に多少の「間」を置きたい時に

We did our best, however, we couldn’t win.

She, after all, came to the meeting without a notice.

 

11．日付けや住所等を書く時に

The next meeting will be on Monday, July 22, 2019.

12.  付加疑問文を使う時に
