間違いはほとんどがうっかりミスです。

ケアレスミスを出来るだけなくすように注意しましょう。

英単語を覚えるのは大変ですが、工夫をしてみましょう。

例えば反対語を対にして覚えると英単語の数が倍になります。

ひとつひとつ覚えるよりも関連するモノを対にするのもコツです。

同じように似たような意味の英単語をいくつか覚えるのも良いでしょう。

今回は反対語を対にして確認してみましょう。

• amateur —– professional   アマープロ
• argue—— agree    議論するー合意する
• ascend—–descend    上がるー下る
• arrogant—–humble    傲慢なー謙虚な
• blunt—–sharp     鈍いー鋭利な

• forgive—–blame     許すー非難する
• guilty—–innocent   有罪ー無罪
• hire——fire     雇用するー解雇する
• hungry—–full      空腹のー満腹の
• knowledge—–ignorance   知識ー無知
• liquid—–solid     液体ー個体
• moist—–dry     湿ったー乾燥した
• obvious—–hidden     明白なー隠れた

英語の諺は沢山ありますが、そのコアの考え方は

日本語の諺とも通じるものが多いです。

表現は違っても同じような意味の諺を日英で比較するのも良いでしょう。

諺を覚えることは英語的な考えを知る意味でも重要です。

英単語を増やすこともできるかも知れません。

実際の会話の中で使ってみると英語が上手いと思われるでしょう。

いろいろな意味で英語の諺をストックしておくと役に立ちます。

いくつか英語の諺を勉強しましょう。

 

1. Clothes do not make the man.  衣服は人を作らず。
2. Cross the stream where it is shallowest.  川は浅瀬を渡れ
3. Direction is the better part of valor. 思慮分別が勇気の大部分
4. Don’t blow your own trumpet.   自慢するな
5. Don’t cross a bridge until you come to it. 取り越し苦労をするな
6. Easy come, easy go.     悪銭身に付かず
7. Empty bags cannot stand upright. 腹が減っては戦が出来ず
8. Every cloud has a silver lining. 　人間万事塞翁が馬
9. Every dog has his day.  誰にも全盛期はある
10. Fall seven times, stand up eight.  七転び八起き

 

英語の諺を学習することは英語の勉強にもなりますが、

英語圏の人々の考え方の違いを知ることにもつながります。

同じような意味の諺が日本語にもあれば理解が一層深まります。

会話の中でちょっと英語の諺を出してみるのも

英語の上達に良いモチベーションを与えてくれるでしょう。

英単語の中には間違い易い英単語が沢山あります。

発音が似ていたり、スペルが似ていたり、

しかし、意味は全然違う英単語と様々です。

テストに出てもうっかりミスをしてしまうかも知れません。

テストで間違うと大変ですが、日常会話でも

ついついミスをしてしまうような似たモノ英単語があります。

良く間違い易い英単語について確認しておきましょう。

 

１．acceptとexcept

        acceptは、動詞です。合意する、受け入れる、受諾する。

　    （例）I accept the responsibility as a manager of the group.

        exceptは、前置詞です。　～を除いて、～以外は、～の他は。

　　（例） I like any vegetables except tomato.

 

２．adviceとadvise

       adviceは、名詞です。　　アドバイス、助言。

　（例）I need some advice to do this job.

      adviseは、動詞です。　助言する。

　（例）She advise him not to smoke.

 

３．allowedとaloud

       発音が似ている英単語です。

　  allowedは、動詞で許可する、許す。

　（例）　We were allowed to leave the meeting.

     aloudは、副詞で声を出して、大きな声で。

　（例）They all read poems aloud.

 

４．coaseとcourse

        これも発音が似ている英単語です。

　　coarseは、形容詞で粗雑な、きめの粗い、粗野な、下品な。

　　（例）He is very coarse in speech.

       courseは、コース、過程、進路、工程、経過。

　　（例）We are going to take a special course next week.

 

５．emigrateとimmigrate

       emigrateは、動詞で移住する、国から出ていく。

　（例）He decided to emigrate abroad.

     immigrateは、動詞で外国に移り住む。

　（例）He lost his job and he had no choice but to immigrate.

 

６．looseとlose

        looseは、形容詞でゆるい、結んでない、自由な等々。

　　（例）I didn’t notice some loose wires hanging there.

       loseは、動詞で失う、なくす、置き忘れる。

　　（例）I have lost my bag.

 

７．principleとprincipal

        principleは、名詞で原理、原則、主義、信条、行動基準等々。

　　（例）It is the first principle of our group.

      principalは、名詞で校長、支配者、社長等々。

　　（例）The principal of the school gave a long speech.

 

８．stationaryとstationery

       これも間違い易い、スペルが似たような英単語です。

　　stationaryは、形容詞で動かない、止まっている、安定した。

　　（例）That train is stationary.

        stationeryは、名詞で文房具、事務用品。

　　（例）I like to look around stationery in the shop.

 

９．forewordとforward

        スペルも発音も似たようなややこしい英単語ですね。

　　forewordは、名詞で序文、緒言、はしがき。

　　（例）I asked him to write a foreword of my book.

        forwardは、形容詞で前方の、前部の、前方へ等々。

　　（例）The company is forward in its engineering.

 

１０．alludeとelude

           alludeは、動詞でほのめかす、それとなく言う。

　　　（例）He alluded to her mistake.

           eludeは、動詞で～を逃れる、避ける、回避する。

　　　（例）He tried to elude the payment.

 

発音が似ていたり、スペルが似ているとつい間違えてしまいます。

間違える英単語は、度々同じ間違いをするものです。

いつも間違うような英単語は良く確認して覚えておきましょう。

間違いがクセにならないように一度確認することも大事です。
