英語の前置詞はシンプルですがとても重要です。

英単語は数万語以上あるでしょうが、

日頃良く使う英語の前置詞は、数十個です。

数も限られているので使い方を覚えるのも直ぐできます。

重要な前置詞の意味や使い方をしっかり理解しましょう。

今回は英語の前置詞byの基本的な使い方を確認します。

 

１．by + 場所

意味は、そばに、隣にあるいは近くに。

The building is by a river.              川のそばに

I live by a train station.                   駅の近くに

２．by + 交通機関

どの乗り物を交通機関として使うか

by+train, car, taxi, bus, plane etc.

I go to my office by car.

She always go back to her home town by bus.

３．by + 通信手段

どのような通信手段を利用するか

by+telephone, email, post etc.

I spoke to him by telephone.    電話で

He sent me a draft by email.    emailで

４．by+支払手段

どのような手段で支払うか

by+credit card, cheque

Can I pay by credit card?   カードで払えますか？

５．by 受け身の文章では誰が行動をするかを表す

The report was compiled by him.

The book was written by him.

６．by+再帰代名詞

by+myself, yourself, himself, ourselves, themselves etc.

I made this box by myself.

Let’s finish this work by ourselves.

７．by+ 動詞ing

行動や手段を表す時に

You can call me by pressing that button.

８．by+時間

時間を伝える時に〜までにと言う意味で

We had to wait at the reception by 1 p.m.

He said he would submit the report by tomorrow.

良く知っている使い方ばかりですが、

時々意味と使い方を確認することは

冠詞の使い方の知識を再確認しておきましょう。

シンプルな英単語eachとeveryですが、

違いとか使い方をしっかり理解しているでしょうか？

どちらも意味自体は簡単だと思いますが、使い方を確認しましょう。

eachは、それぞれ、各々で

everyは、どれもみんなと言う意味ですが、

それぞれ使い方を迷わないように理解してください。

eachは、代名詞、形容詞、副詞として使われますが、

everyは、形容詞としてしか使われません。

• Each member has an iPhone. メンバー各々が持っている。
• Every member has an iPhone. どのメンバーも持っている。

上の例文で分かるようにeachは、メンバーひとりひとりを重視して使われています。

一方everyは、グループの全体を意識しながらそのグループの個別メンバーの誰もがと言う使い方です。

意味としては、eachは、おのおの、everyは、誰でもみな、とかどれもみな、と言う意味です。

それでは使い方の違いです。

代名詞用法　Each of the members must prepare a report.

形容詞用法　We sent the report to each member.

副詞用法　Members received two books each.

eachは、みっつの用法がありますが、everyは形容詞用法だけで使われます。

Every member is required by the group.

They always take holidays once every year.

All members have every reason to work together.
