英単語の語彙数を増やすにはコツがあります。

受験勉強のような記憶だけに頼るのは

試験が終わればすぐ忘れてしまい効率的ではありません。

英単語には、接頭辞、語根、接尾辞と言うものがあって

その多くはラテン語やギリシャ語起源です。

英単語の語彙数を増やすにはこのような接頭辞や接尾辞をカギに

連想ゲーム方式で覚えるのが記憶の定着にも役立ちます。

今回は、英単語の接尾辞を整理してみましょう。

１．名詞の接尾辞パターン

• -er    helper,   teacher,   dancer,  engineer   意味は「人」
• -or    investigator, negotiator, conductor, translator  「～する人」
• -ment  movement, retirement, establishment「行動」や「その結果」
• -ness awareness, kindness, darkness 「状態」や「性質」
• -ion celebration, decoration, opinion,decision 「経緯、状態、結果」
• -age  breakage, passage, wreckage 「経緯、行動、結果」
• -ance  importance, hindrance, attendance 「行動、状態」
• -ee  referee, assignee, lessee  「人」
• -ence  difference    「行動、状態」
• -ery   bakery    「仕事の形態や場所」
• -ness  waitress   「女性形をつくる」
• -ism  heroism, Americanism  「信念、状況」

 

２．形容詞の接尾辞パターン

• -able  adaptable, preventable, capable  「可能であること」
• -ant  brilliant, reliant, defiant  「傾向がある」
• -ful  beautiful, grateful   「いっぱい、十分な」
• -ous  joyous, humorous 「その要素をふくむ」
• -less  hopeless, fearless, restless  「～がない」
• -ible flexible, accessible  「～できる」
• -like lifelike   「～と同じような、似ている」
• -some  quarrelsome    「傾向がある」
• -ish  selfish, greenish    「～じみた、～性の」

 

３．動詞の接尾辞パターン

• -en  soften fasten, strengthen  「～する」
• -ing  laughing, swimming, driving  「現在進行形、行動」

 

４．副詞の接尾辞パターン

• -ly  quickly, abruptly  「状態で」
• -ward  forward, backward   「～の方向へ」
• -ways  sideways   「～の方向へ」

 

接尾辞にはそれぞれ意味とパターンがあります。

英単語をひとつづつ覚えるよりは、このようなパターンを覚えて

いくつかの英単語を関連付けて覚えることが語彙数を増やすコツです。

英語の副詞にはいろいろありますが、

副詞の使い方を種類分けすると６つになります。

英語の副詞の使い方についてその種類分けで見てみましょう。

 

英語の副詞を分類すると次の６種類になります。

1. 　時間に関する副詞
2. 　頻度に関する副詞
3. 　場所に関する副詞
4. 　方法に関する副詞
5. 　程度に関する副詞
6. 　肯定否定に関する副詞

 

それぞれの使い方について確認しましょう。

　１．時間に関する副詞

　　　already, ago, before, yet, never, soon, yesterday, lately

            例文

• I have already seen that movie.
• I haven’t seen her yet.
• He will come here soon.
• You have never been there yet.
• I haven’t heard from her lately.　　

       

     ２．頻度に関する副詞

　　　 always, usually, normally, often, sometimes, seldom, rarely

            例文

•  I always go there every Sunday.
•  I usually have a pizza for lunch.
•  I normally go there by bus.
•  He often work on Sundays.
•  I sometimes walk along the river.
•  I seldom watch TV.
•  She rarely eat meat for dinner. 

 

      ３．場所に関する副詞　

　　　  here, everywhere, near, nearby, down, away, backwards

              例文

• 　I have lived here for about ten years.
•     There is somebody standing nearby.
•     The sun is going down.
•      He walked backwards towards the wall.
•      She is away on holiday until the end of this month.

 

       ４．方法に関する副詞　

　　　  slowly, so, badly, beautifully, delightfully, loudly,

             例文

• 　Could you speak more slowly?
•    Is that so?
•    They treated him so badly.
•     She dressed beautifully at the party.
•     His speech was delightfully incisive.
•     The music was heard loudly in the next room.

 

           ５．程度に関する副詞

　　　　　almost, fully, rather, quite, enough, perfectly, 

                   例文

• 　　He is almost fifty years old.
•         I am fully prepared.
•         She is rather occupied.
•        I am quite satisfied with the result.
•        They had had enough to eat.
•        The report was perfectly true.

 

               ６．肯定・否定に関する副詞

　　　　       certainly, surely, apparently, obviously, undoubtedly,

                      例文

• 　I will certainly come tomorrow again.
•    Surely your opinion is wrong.
•     Apparently it’s going to rain this afternoon.
•     He is obviously in a bad mood.
•     His opinion  is undoubtedly based on wrong information.

 

副詞としては上記の他にも沢山ありますが、

副詞を分類して効率よくその意味を理解して

実際の会話に効果的に活用できるようにしておきましょう。

英語上達のコツは、あまり難しく考えないことです。

受験勉強ではクイズのような英単語ばかりでした。

試験には出たのでしょうが、日常会話では

ほとんど使った覚えがありません。

英単語も難しいものは後回しにしましょう。

日常会話ではシンプルに基礎英単語ですませましょう。

 

今回はその例として基礎英単語TAKEを使ったフレーズです。

難しい英単語を使わなくてもtake何とかと繋げれば

相当沢山の表現が可能です。

まずはこんな簡単なコツから英語上達を目指すことです。

●　take a bow  お辞儀をする

●     take a break      休憩する

●　take a call    電話を取る

●　take a chance    いちかばちかやってみる

●　take a class     授業を受ける

●　take a decision    決断する

●　take a holiday       休暇を取る

●　take a lesson      レッスンを受ける

●　take a look     見る、見てみる

●　take a message   伝言を取る

●　take a nap    昼寝をする

●　take a photo    写真を撮る

●　take a rest     休憩する

●　take a risk      危険を冒す

●　take a seat      座る

●　take a shower    シャワーを使う

●　take a step   一歩進む、措置を講じる

●　take action    行動する

●　take advantage of    活用する、活かす

●　take advice  助言を得る

●　take care of    世話する

●　take charge of  ～を担当する、　～の責任がある

●　take notes     メモを取る

●　take part in   参加する

●     take place      開催される、起こる

 

基礎英単語takeを使っていろいろな表現ができます。

難しい単語を使おうとせず、このような基礎英単語で

シンプルに表現できるように頭を柔軟にしておきましょう。

I thinkと言えば「～と思う」と言う意味ですが、

英語では他にもいろいろな言い方があります。

私は～と考える。とか私は～と思う。とか言いたい時に

I thinkばかりでは単調です。

ちょっと言い方を変えて味付けを変えてみてはどうでしょうか？

英語の上達は、このようなバリエーションを覚えることも

とても有益でいろいろな言い方を覚えるのは効率的上達法です。

それではI think~の他の表現法を確認しましょう。

 

• In my opinion, the report is not correct.
• I believe that he will do his best to complete the project.
• I assume she can come to the party.
• In my point of view, the sales is getting to recover.
• I consider there is a risk in this venture.
• To me, it is not a big problem.
• As far as I can tell, this novel is based on his experience.
• From my point of view, your opinion is wrong.
• To my mind, he has already moved to another city.
• As far as I am concerned she is not a member of this association.
• I feel we should finish this work by this Sunday.
• It seems to me that your plan costs too much money.
• As I see it, we have to prepare for any risk.
• I honestly believe that he is ready to support us.

 

簡単な表現「私は～と思う。」にもいろいろな言い方があります。

いつもI thinkではなく、時々言い方を変えてバリエーションをつけましょう。

言い方を変えることで英語らしい会話ができるようになるかも知れません。

いろいろな表現を覚えることで英会話の幅も広がります。

これを繰り返すことで英語の上達も目に見えてくるようになります。
