英語で言いたいことが言えないと言う悩みを良く聞きます。英語で言いたいことをいろいろ考えて文章を作るのに時間がかかる、うまく英単語が出てこないと悩みは尽きません。
日本人は、真面目な国民性なので完璧主義を求めすぎです。購入した英文法の本を全部読破してからとか、英会話スクールを完全に終了してからとか自分で完璧主義の枠にはめ過ぎていないでしょうか？完璧主義はもう止めましょう。走りながら考えれば良いのだと割り切ることです。
英語は使いながら覚えて行けば良いのです。ドンドン使う機会を増やして、ドンドン間違いをして、ミスをしながら吸収して行けば良いのです。
英語には便利なイディオムと言うものがあります。決まり文句のような人口に膾炙した言い方のパターンをイディオムと言います。誰でも知っているこのようなイディオムを使えば言いたいことが言えるようになります。何事も慣れです。イディオムを沢山覚えて使ってみましょう。使って行けば英語に慣れて言いたいことが言えるようになります。
良く使われるイディオムをいくつか見て行きましょう。
１．a bitter pill 苦い薬＝耳が痛い事実だけど有益なことや情報
He advised me a bitter pill but I could revise my plan in the long run.
２．actions speak louder than words 行動は、言葉よりも雄弁である。
Actions speak louder than words. Don’t complain and just do it.
３． a dime a dozen ありふれたもの、安っぽいもの
Engineers in this field are a dime a dozen. 掃いて捨てる程いる
４．add insult to injury 踏んだり蹴ったり
I slipped, and add insult to injury, I broke my leg at the door.
５．all ears すべてが耳だ＝聴きたくて仕方がない
I am all ears, tell me the story.
６．beat around the bush 遠回しに言う
Don’t beat around the bush, tell me the truth.
７．bite off more than you can chew 手に余る仕事をする
I bit off more than I can chew when I managed to take that task.
８． call it a day 仕事を終わりにする
We are all tired. Let’s call it a day.
９． can’t judge a book by its cover 見た目でなく中身が大事
Don’t judge a book by its cover. 人は見かけによらないもの。
10．cry over spilt milk 覆水盆に返らず
It’s no use crying over spilt milk.
11．Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. ひとつのことに全てを賭けるな

12. hit the road 出発する 旅に出る
We must hit the road before we face a traffic jam.
13. kill two birds with one stone 一石二鳥 一挙両得
If I can get this contract, I can kill two birds with one stone.
13. miss the boat チャンスを逃す
I didn’t have this information and I eventually miss the boat.
14. a piece of cake お茶の子さいさい 簡単なこと
I will do that. It’s a piece of cake.
15. once in a blue moon めったにないこと
You must take that chance. It comes once in a blue moon.
16. a big fish in a little pond 井の中の蛙 お山の大将
He is a big fish in a little pond and everybody knows it.
17. picture paints a thousand words 百聞は一見に如かず
He explained with many slides. He knew picture paints a thousand words.
18. off the hook 責任を逃れる
He didn’t do much to get me off the hook. 私を助けてくれなかった。
19. couch potato 怠け者
He was watching TV all day. He is really a couch potato.
20. cat nap うたた寝
A fire broke out when he was taking a cat nap.
